How To Dance Goth (Oh My Goth!)

Folks, at some point I plan on a posting some very basic information for you on what it is to be Goth, the origins of Goth, the reason Goths are called Goths, and how the modern Goth gets on in the 21st century, etc.

This is not that time.

Instead, I'd like to share with you this (delightfully tongue-in-cheek) video, "How To Dance Goth," which will, by itself, give you a taste of what today's Goth is like. Sort of.

Prendre plaisir! (Enjoy!)

  1. Aw, that was a cute video :) I feel just a little bit more goth now!

I'm told I was a bit gothic in latter high school years, but mostly I think it was the emo attitude I had that gave people that impression ('cause back then there were no emos, just goths!). Also I did have some slightly gothic-looking clothing.

Love the goth style :) I would very much enjoy reading your goth-themed posts!

    1. I can totally see a gloomy goth lurking behind that sunny exterior of yours, Trisha. *Totally* ;-)

    2. Well, I do have photographic evidence of my "more goth-like" days, and I will show those off sometime. haha. But yeah, not really that way now. Not that I wouldn't want to be - I'm just way too lazy to make any kind of effort at all! ;)

  2. Ah, diagrams. That should help me out :)

Being of German ancestry, I am Goth my birth, not necessarily by current style! Vlad the Impaler was so misunderstood.

    .....dhole

    1. I'm Romanian, so I know what you mean. And Vlad the Impaler really was misunderstood.

Loved the diagrams - really helped improving my Goth moves.

    2. @Donna - LOL, poor Vlad! ;-)

      @Adriana - Happy to help! :-)

    2. Thanks, Lady. I am too. <3 We chatted via Facebook chat today, W00000T! (I guess I'm just thrilled that he was willing to/wanted to.) :-D

  4. Privyet! Good to hear Balthazar arrived safely. I'd love to go to Russia someday. A good friend of mine from my college years was from Moscow. She had the best vodka at her house, directly from the mother country. (; Thanks for the dance lessons.

    1. Hmmm, I wonder if vodka and goth dance mix well...

  5. Ok, I think I have the stepping over the dead friend part down...also, the bee attack part, I think I look way more panicky and less graceful than the demo. I need to work on that

    1. LOL, yeah, that bee-dance chick looked way too composed. Or apathetic. Yeah, probably the latter. :-D

  6. My "spider web" dance would be somewhat different. As soon as the instructor said to imagine being surrounded by webs, Lilith was all calm. Yeah, not gonna happen with me. lol

I'm glad Balthazar arrived safely. Are you a bundle of nerves mixed with excitement for him? Isn't it so weird how our emotions can play tug o' war? Here's to him having a fab time!!!

    1. Word; fending off cobwebs isn't exactly my idea of a good time, either. :-)

Yes and no about the nerves thing. The worst bits so far have been the day he flew out there (I'm seriously phobic and get massively worked up, internally, when I or my loved ones fly) and then when I spoke with him briefly yesterday and he seemed unhappy about how his first day of classes had gone (it was difficult to adjust to only Russian for all those hours). I silently wigged out but sent him an encouraging follow-up e-mail and learned from him today that the 2nd day went much better, which was a massive relief to me. Parenting sucks, Dude. I know, intellectually, that going through rough times is part of life and we have to let our kids handle the milder stuff so they won't fall to pieces when the harder stuff hits. But emotionally, my Goth Mom senses kick into overdrive when he's suffering or unhappy - I JUST WANT TO MAKE IT STOOOOOOOOOOP!!!!!!!!!!

      Ahem.

      :-)

  7. Too funny, but now even I can dance! Got those moves down, especially the stepping over the dead body! :)

I know, I still have to answer your email. I'm doing things backwards today! See you soon, and good for Balthazar, but I know you'll be much happier when he's safely back home.

  16. Excellent video! I definitely have avoiding the bee down pat, been doing that all my life and had no idea it could be worked into dance. Win for me! I was especially fond of the dancers at rest, waiting for the next part. I think I have to share that video on facebook.

Glad Balthy arrived safe and sound and is enjoying his stay. I'm not surprised that the first day of Russian immersian study was a tough transition; glad he was able to embrace and get it the next. I took one year of Russian back in the long, long ago when I went to college. Tough language!

    1. Didn't know that about you, SL. I've found Russian a sexy language for, like, ages, but never felt compelled to study it. Of course, that could be because I never attended a college that offered it.

  18. I'm so happy your son is golden! I enjoyed the video so much. It is a much more refined explanation (tongue-in-cheek) than my father once had about "The Twist." Back ... WAY back ... in the early '60s.

    1. I really dig how the Twist is so adaptable - there are tunes being released even now which are perfect for it. :-)
