Massage ~ Aphrodisiacs from A to Z

Massages are wonderful, aren't they? (Or so I've heard; the last shoulder massage I had gave me a wicked headache that was not tempered by judiciously taken Advil and lasted over 24 hours, so, le suck.) Anyway, lots of folks swear by them for their medicinal properties, however, they also seem capable of providing a healing of a far different nature. (If ya know what I mean. Bom-chicka-whomp-whomp.)

Y U SO SEX-AY?
Massage stimulates circulation which, as we've already seen in previous A to Z entries, proves beneficial to sexy intercourse. Because it promotes relaxation, the mind turns itself away from the cares of the world and into a state of receptivity which can only help with the introduction of intimacy.

According to Eric J. Leech of Planet Green, a libido-revving massage would be given with cornstarch. (Yeah. Cornstarch. Who knew?) Mr. Leech assures that "...the initial sensation of cornstarch dropping on the skin mimics the sensation of liquid silk." (W00F!) I suppose you could spend a mini-fortune on scented massage oils and whatnot, but if the cornstarch thing works, it would seem a bargain, by comparison. (See Recipe #1, below, for more on this method.)

  1. This is the first time I've looked at my blog roll in two weeks--I had no idea you had such a fun and educational topic! I definitely have to go back and read the rest. Your first paragraph made me totally laugh. I've had my share of terrible massages and am so picky that they tend to be anti-aphrodisiacs for me, but they're supposed to be one of the best ways to get someone laid.

    1. Thanks so much, Colleen. I'm waaaaaaay behind on my bloggery, even for stuff for the Challenge, so I'm sorry I haven't popped round your blog in a while. Hope to catch up with you, and all, soonishly.

  2. I know lots of people who swear by them, too, but the idea of having one myself makes me just want to run in the opposite direction.

    1. Ever had one/had a bad experience with one, or is it just the idea of a stranger's hands on you is creepy? (The latter's true for me.)

  3. I am so very much a massage girl. Unfortunately I can't find many masseuses who can (or are willing to) massage me hard enough. ;) My muscles are seriously a rock-hard mess of knots at the moment and I need a lot of pressure to fix 'em!

    1. Trishaws, if I may - keep yourself well hydrated at all times. And stretch. Flexibility is vitally important to the muscle fibres, it helps to realigned them and ease tension.

If you are physically active, then try fresh oranges post workout, not juice. A study was conducted that showed consuming a fresh orange post training help to reduce the production of lactic acid within the muscle fibres.

If your knots are in your back ( and this s good for your glutes also), get a tennis ball, place it on the floor and then lie on top of it, making sure it is place directly under your problem area. Then gently, in small circular movements, move your weight over the tennis ball ensuring it is applying pressure to the knotted area. And it you are really up to it then you could use a baseball or golf ball.

I'm guessing your areas are in the shoulders and around our scaps and mid back. Glutes can also be amazingly tight - those I usually dig out with the aid of my elbows :)

One last thing - if it is really bad, and by the sounds of it you are long term - you could try acupuncture. Needles can get to the heart of a knotted muscle, whereas massage can only compress or strip out in layers. Once the muscle has been needled, then get some deep tissue work done.

      Hope this helps :)

  4. I've been doing sports massage professionally for 7 years now, and it's the first time I've heard of cornstarch as a massage medium? Who would have guessed!

And yes, there are folks out there who have no clue when it comes to treating the human body in terms of massage. They just plough on in with no regard. Personally, I tailor the massage to each individual, primarily due to the fact everyone has a different tolerance to pain. Interestingly enough science has discovered that pain tolerance is determined by a single, specific gene within the human body. And, like a sliding scale there are also extremes due to this. Some poor unfortunates experience intense, crippling pain at the slightest touch, whilst others can tolerate unusually high amounts of pain. But, the most incredible thing about this 'pain gene' is that some people are missing it altogether. A family in Italy have three generations that are minus the pain gene and have been studied by scientists because of this, and the condition has now been named after them.

This condition - apologies for I cannot recall the name of it - is such that a person with it could happily slice their finger off and not bat an eyelid.

During the BBC program 'Horizon' about pain and this gene, they recounted experiences from people on this sliding scale. It's worthy of a search if you have a mind to - amazing stuff.

Mina - your headache experience is not unusual, but to be honest, I'm guessing your trapezius, which originates from the occipital region of the skull and inserts mid thoracic (approx where the bra clasps are on your back), were most likely long term hypertonic (very tight over long period of time), and the person massaging probably went in a little too hard. Don't write off massage of any kind. It is all beneficial, be it physical, mental, psychological or even spiritual... and obviously erotic.

The only problem is when a person gets turned on during a session unintentionally through no fault of the massage therapist, then that could be a problem.

I think two of the funniest - and slightly embarrassing moments - I've experienced during my years as a sports massage therapist were when an elderly gentleman said I should take my work to Amsterdam, as he thought I could make a lot of money over there. He then followed that up with the question, "Do you like leather and chains?"

The other funny moment was during a session with one of my regular clients, a lady roughly my age range and very well spoken and well-to-do. We were mid point during the treatment and I was performing some trigger point work on her glute. As normal I asked, "How's that feeling? Is the pressure ok?"
Face down on my bench, she replied, "We'll, I'm aware of you fingering me, but it's ok."
I wish I could have seen my face at that moment. I maintained pressure, but my mind was fighting between a) bursting out laughing. b) making a joke about what was just said. c) ignoring it and continue as if I hadn't noticed.

I chose to ignoring it. But it was difficult, especially as the poor lady went slightly rigid as she realised what she'd said, and began trying to explain her last words, to which I had to reassure her that I fully understood what she had meant - which I did, but it still made me grin like a stupid school boy. Sometimes, it's a blessing to have people face down during massage.

    1. Thanks so much for sharing all this info, Mark, I really appreciate it. God knows I've been holding a lot of tension in my neck and shoulders for *years*. I do fear a repeat God-awful-headache experience, I must admit, but perhaps with another masseuse it'd turn out all right. And LOL at your stories. :-)

  5. I run on a regular basis and constantly have some kind of muscular pain or soreness. Plus, all the time sitting in front of the computer doesn't help. So, I'm definitely a fan of massage and returning the favor can be just as rewarding. And there's nothing better than a good massage from someone who knows what they're doing. I found osteopathy to be excellent for the body as well,(not for sexy reasons, more for general body realignment) but it's hard to find a good practitioner.

  6. Bom-chicka-whomp-whomp.) HAHA! That made me laugh and I've been saying it out loud for the last 5 minutes. I know. I don't know what's wrong with me either.

I'm happy to go with cornstarch if it gets me a good rub up. ;)

Deep sigh, excuse me, my husband just got home from work. :)

  9. Most reflexologists in the U.S use cornstarch instead of oils when working the feet. I never knew the liquid silk thing though I'm not sure I want it all over my body. Great post Mina I have shared them all with Dear Aphrodite Facebook Page - it seems a good fit.

  11. Hey there,

Yes, time for another um eagerly anticipated comment from me. Or something like that :) I was given a massage at a public display booth at a fair for bringing further awareness about mental health issues, named "Sanity Fair." The lady said she was finished the massage. I said, "Um can I like lay here for a few minutes?!" My alternative alphabet challenge has deliberately met this A to Z at the letter "M" :)

    Happy alphabeting!

    Gary :)

  12. Nothing like a good massage. You're right about the bad ones being totally sucky! I've had some that have left me in pain for days...no thank you. I admit that I love giving massages...always have. Been told that I give a good one, maybe I missed my calling. Anyway, I agree that if given properly a massage can be way sexy. Cornstarch...who know? Filing that away in memory for future experimentation. Thanks Mina! ;)

  13. I'd be so concerned about cornstarch going everywhere that I wouldn't enjoy the massage, b/c I'm anal that way. lol But I love having my back scratched & rubbed, esp. lightly w/ fingertips. Almost better than sex. Almost.
